Chapter Sixteen

“Choosing your father’s garments was wise.” Yrsa pushed out of the chair and circled Vona. “Looks good. Your eyes are too pretty so keep them downcast.”

“Aye.” Vona laughed. “You do realize that is the first time you have ever complimented me.”

Yrsa snorted. “Those you do not need.”

Smirking, Vona watched her in the mirror’s reflection when she said, “Still lovely to hear. I bet Lord Juluan—”

“Not up for discussion,” Yrsa snapped, but a peach-colored blush spread across her cheeks. “I suggest you move to your old room. Let Dunstan prepare this one for your father’s return.”

Vona faced Yrsa. “I assume you tasked him already?”

“Aye.”

Vona pursed her lips. “Now, to test this.” She marched to the door, but Yrsa blocked her. “I do not want to find out when the need is great that this disguise fools no one. If Thomas, who knows me best in Netherbury, cannot see me behind the scarf, then it will work.” She smiled. “Besides, we need to share the gold he stole.”

“I can whisper anything you need to convey. He is an air-gifted sentinel, after all.”

Vona tapped her foot, her hands on her hips. “How do you know no one else is?”

When Yrsa had nothing more to say, Vona ventured a quick trip via Father’s hidden room to fetch the bag Thomas had stolen.

Yrsa trailed Vona to the stables, her scowl saying it all. Without further protestations, they rode toward Netherbury. As they neared, Vona slowed Honey to a canter. “We approach from the road. You vault me onto the roof, and I shall enter through the uppermost window.”

“Adding architecture and the most common designs to your studies, in hindsight, was unwise,” Yrsa muttered. “In this case, the sheriff’s bedroom closest to the tower will help us in this silliness.”

Vona grinned, threw her head back and laughed. “I do love you, Yrsa-my-guardian.”

“Right now, lass, I do not feel any affection for you.” Yrsa glared ahead.

Vona chuckled but said no more, circling Netherbury along the shadows to pause outside the church. She slipped through the door while Yrsa waited, silencing both horses.

“Friar?” Vona whispered.

“Ah, Robbin, a sight for sore eyes.” The old man scurried toward her, nimble on his bent legs.

“I have come to bless our Lord’s people.” She slipped the coin across to him.

“You are truly a miracle, Robbin.”

“I merely do what I can, Friar.” She ducked through the door, closed it quietly, and mounted Honey. “That went well,” she whispered to Yrsa. Her vigilant guardian muttered something about ‘luck not being the same as skill.’

Minutes later, they drew up to the outer wall of the guardhouse. Once in position, Vona dismounted and handed Honey’s reins to Yrsa.

“I still think this is foolhardy,” Yrsa grumbled, peering up the wooden walls of the guardhouse, to the roof two levels higher.

Vona snapped, then softened her tone, not wanting to sound like her mother. “We went over this. Unless you can guarantee no one will hear your whispers, this is the only way.”
